Aliyev congratulates Azeris of solidarity day
President Ilham Aliyev congratulated Azerbaijanis
throughout the world on December 31, the Day of Solidarity of
Azerbaijanis, the state news agency Azertag reported.
The congratulatory letter says that the date, which is solemnly marked in the country and worldwide each year, personifies national unity, love for Azerbaijan, respect for national and moral values and the people`s bonds to their homeland.
"The idea of solidarity among world Azerbaijanis, which is cherished by our countrymen around the globe, has been raised to the level of state policy and consistently realized owing to the historical merits of the national leader Heydar Aliyev," the president wrote.
The letter said further that strengthening the national identity of Azerbaijanis living in countries the world over, their unity, and links to their historical homeland in past years has turned the Diaspora`s potential into an important factor. Successful execution of decisions adopted at the second congress of world Azerbaijanis, held in March 2006, has given a powerful incentive to the establishment of the Diaspora, and promoting the ideology of Azerbaijanism, which leans on national-cultural values and those of mankind.
The letter said Azerbaijanis today are keen on conveying the truth about their country to the world community, promoting Azerbaijan`s abundant cultural heritage, and preventing the spreading of propaganda by Armenia. At the same time, with the support of the Azerbaijani government substantial steps are being taken to forge cooperation with the lobbies of friendly nations.
President Aliyev noted that the key objective facing the Azerbaijani people today is to achieve a speedy and fair settlement to the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict with Armenia and to restore the country`s territorial integrity.
"I believe that all of our compatriots will step up effort in this area, along with the Azerbaijani state…Our Diaspora has to increase its organization and flexibility, expand its relations with the Diaspora centers of other nations, and quickly counter propaganda directed against our country."
Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan`s internationally recognized territory since the early 1990s, in defiance of international law and UN resolutions. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks have been fruitless so far and refugees remain stranded.
