Political parties may hold discussions in January
Discussions among Azerbaijani political parties may
be launched in January, the chairman of the opposition-leaning
Whole Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan has said.
Gudrat Hasanguliyev said he had recently discussed the issue with the executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), Ali Ahmadov. The latter noted that inter-party discussions on state funding of political parties and the proposed changes and addenda to the Law on Political Parties were envisioned. The dialog may also cover issues pertaining to the relations between authorities and the political opposition.
He emphasized that after October 15 presidential elections, President Ilham Aliyev, who was re-elected for a second five-year term, said that a new political climate has emerged in the country. "The January meeting could be a concrete step toward fulfilling the statement made by the head of state."
Hasanguliyev stressed, however, that the sides should take certain mutual steps to ensure that the meeting takes place.
"The latest presidential election was a result of this process. We are now anticipating further steps in this direction," the party leader said.
He noted that only opposition parties staunchly opposed to the government could pose stumbling blocks for the upcoming meetings taking place, as official circles are against holding discussions with representatives of the parties that do not recognize the legitimacy of the authorities.
Hasanguliyev said this was a psychological problem that had to be overcome. "An invitation to this meeting will be made by NAP. I would really like for all political parties to take part in it."
