Baku environmental picture called bleak
The environmental situation in Baku is critical,
according to research by a local group.
Environmental pollution in the capital is mainly caused by exhaust
gases released by passenger autos, said Kamil Salimov, the chairman
of a joint taskforce on the Application of International Standards
on Human Rights in Azerbaijan.
Salimov told a news conference about the results of the
organization`s activity in October-November when most people who
called the hot line complained about the sharp deterioration of the
air quality. Statistics released revealed an increasing share of
cheap and low-quality automobiles in Baku that do not meet modern
environmental requirements.
According to Salimov, the excessive number of cars often leads to
traffic jams, fuel combustion, an increase in the number of traffic
accidents and more pollution. Experts believe that cars are
responsible for 45-60% of the environmental pollution in the
country.
