NATO official delivers `three messages`
NATO Deputy Secretary General Claudio Bisogniero
paying an official visit to Baku said on Tuesday that he had "three
messages" for Azerbaijan.
"The first message is that NATO is attaching great importance to its cooperation with Azerbaijan. Secondly, we support the reforms under way in the country, in particular, those in the defense sector. Thirdly, the alliance is ready to keep on contributing to these reforms," Bisogniero told a news briefing on Tuesday.
He noted that NATO does not see its special role in settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict, but backs the ongoing peace talks. "We support a negotiated conflict settlement with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group. We believe that a peaceful solution would meet the interests of all parties involved."
Bisogniero added that NATO welcomes some advances that have been achieved in the peace process.
The NATO-Azerbaijan relations were established in 1992 when the country joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council. The organization was renamed into the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in 1997.
