Three detained over deadly blast in Baku
Three suspects have been detained following
Saturday`s deadly explosion at an apartment building in the center
of Baku.
One of the detainees is a foreman and two others are rank-and-file construction workers. They were performing repair work at a fourth floor apartment, the Nizami district prosecutor`s office said. Their identity has not been disclosed due to the ongoing investigation.
The powerful explosion rocked the five-story residential building, located on Nakhchivansky Street in the district during the morning hours, killing two people and injuring six others, including a child. A leaking natural gas line was the most probable cause of the accident, investigators concluded.
A criminal case has been opened on charges of violating safety regulations during construction operations and negligence resulting in human casualties and other grave consequences.
The residents of the building have been temporarily settled in a nearby kindergarten.
Meanwhile, residents of the building continue speculating on what caused the blast. Some say a hand-made gas device was being used on the third or fourth floor, which could have caused the explosion, while other eyewitnesses said that the blast happened immediately after a construction worker entered the building with a lit cigarette.
Explosions caused by gas leaks have taken place in Azerbaijan in the past. In late November 2000, a gas explosion destroyed three stories of a nine-story building in the Yeni Yasamal settlement of Baku, killing a resident of one of the apartments.
