Global use of nuclear energy in int`l limelight
The use of nuclear energy will increase around the
world in light of depleting hydrocarbon reserves, industry analysts
say. Related issues were discussed at a conference joined by
international experts in Baku on Wednesday.
Reports on nuclear research were heard at the event, entitled "The role of nuclear energy in future energy security." Speakers noted that research in this field had been started in Azerbaijan.
Adil Garibov, director of the Institute of Radiation Problems of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, has told reporters that under an agreement reached with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog, a nuclear research reactor with the output capacity of 20-25 megawatt will be constructed in Azerbaijan by 2011. The cost of the operations is not known at this point.
The most advanced and safe nuclear reactors are available in the United States, Canada and Russia.
441 such reactors, with total capacity of 380 gigawatts, are currently operated in the world. The facilities meet 15.2% of global demand for electricity.
Experts estimate that new uranium fields will suffice for the next 150,000 years, while the reserves of uranium containing phosphate - for 170,000 years, and those of uranium at sea 60,000 years.
