Armenian troops breach ceasefire with Azerbaijan

The situation on the contact line between Azerbaijan and Armenia has remained tense as the Armenian Armed Forces shattered ceasefire a total of 110 times throughout the day, Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry reported on January 11.

Armenian armed forces, located in Armenia's Vozashen village of Ijevan region, nameless hills of Krasnoselk region subjected to fire the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces located in nameless hills of Gazakh and Gadabay regions.

The ceasefire was violated in Talish, Gulustan villages in Goranboy region, Goyarkh, Chilaburt villages in Tartar region, Shikhlar, Novruzlu, Javahirli, Kangarli, Sarijali, Shuraabad, Yusifjanli, Marzali and Garagashli villages in Agdam region, Kuropatkino village in Khojavand region, Horadiz, Garakhanbayli, Gorgan, Ashagi Seyidahmadli villages in Fuzuli region, Mehdili village in Jabrayil region, as well as nameless hills in Goygol, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrayil regions.

In view of the operational situation, Azerbaijani armed forces carried out 114 strikes on enemy positions.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
