Azerbaijan keen on closer cooperation with Afghanistan
Azerbaijan is interested in developing cooperation with Afghanistan, Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov has said.
Speaking during a Monday meeting with Mohammad Yunis Qanuni, Speaker of the Lower House in Afghanistan`s National Assembly, he said that although the two countries` representatives were successfully cooperating within international organizations, inter-parliamentary relations need to be enhanced. "However, it is beyond doubt that progress will be achieved in this area after Qanuni`s visit," the speaker said.
Asadov emphasized that Azerbaijani-Afghan relations have recently begun to develop in a variety of fields. According to Asadov, this progress is also being seen in economic cooperation. As an example of this progress, bilateral trade turnover amounted to some $49 million in 2007 while reaching $70 million during the first eight months of 2008.
Asadov said Azerbaijan and Afghanistan were successfully working together in the area of security as well.
"We are striving toward restoring peace all over the world, and Azerbaijani peacekeepers` service in Afghanistan is proof of that."
Qanuni, for his part, said Azerbaijan and Afghanistan are countries of special importance in the system of international relations and called for boosting inter-parliamentary relations.
Qanuni arrived in Baku on Sunday.
