Smoking in public may be banned

3 December 2008 22:15 (UTC+04:00)
Smoking in public may be banned
A draft law prohibiting smoking in public places will be considered by the Azerbaijani parliament soon, MP Ganira Pashayeva has told a local TV channel.
The MP said the document, being initiated by the standing parliamentary commission on social policies, envisions a ban to be imposed on smoking in places with more than four people including educational institutions, hospitals, transport vehicles, administrative buildings and public catering facilities.
If the bill is passed into law by the parliament, people found guilty violating the law would face hefty fines.
Bans on smoking are already in effect in a number of developed European countries.
In Turkey, for instance, there are fines for promoting smoking in films, music clips and other images.
