US backs Azeri group’s project to promote free election
The US embassy in Azerbaijan has backed a project by a local group on promoting free and transparent conduct of next year’s presidential elections.
The project on "Increasing Voter Activeness in the Regions and Support to NGOs’ Active Participation in the Processes" is being implemented in three towns of Azerbaijan by the Sumgayit Youths Legal Enlightenment public union. It aims to increase public awareness about international legal norms on the conduct of elections and to encourage citizens’ participation in the electoral process.
Two one-hour television debates entitled "Presidential election-2008: civil responsibility" will be organized on each TV channel in Sumgayit, Ganja and Lankaran. A memory book containing excerpts from the national legislation banning electoral fraud and reflecting international calls for fair elections will be compiled as well as public opinion polls conducted as part of the project.*
