Armenian cleric calls for peace
Armenian Catalicos Garegin II has called for forging "friendly
neighborhood relations" with Azerbaijan and vigorous effort to
settle the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict in peace.
"We should live side by side, as neighbors, and support each other. These efforts could yield good results but only provided that peace and stability is maintained," the cleric said in an interview carried by Russian Izvestiya newspaper.
Garegin II also pointed to the importance of clerical leaders' involvement in the negotiated settlement of the long-standing dispute. He reminded that such meetings between clerics were organized earlier on the initiative of Russian Patriarch Aleksiy II. "I have met with the Azerbaijani clerical leader five or six times. The goal of these meetings was to create an atmosphere in which our state servants will be able to discuss outstanding problems and reach mutual understanding," he said.
