Opposition leader steps down

27 December 2007 17:42 (UTC+04:00)

The chairman of the opposition-minded Party for National Independence of Azerbaijan (PNIA), Ayaz Rustamov, has resigned from his post.
The party leader explained his move with health problems. The political council of the party will consider the resignation tendered by Rustamov at its next meeting.
Rustamov was elected the PNIA chairman after former leader Ali Aliyev was expelled for his activity contradicting the party's political course. Aliyev, who chairs the Civil and Development Party, was the successor of Etibar Mammadov, the founder and first chairman of PNIA.
