Armenian political refugee in Azerbaijan has glaring message for world

An Armenian political activist’s request for political asylum in Azerbaijan sends a message to the whole world, including the European Parliament, which had recently adopted a biased resolution on Azerbaijan.

Bayram Safarov, the chairman of the Azerbaijani Community of Nagorno-Karabakh made these remarks commenting on the escape of Vahan Martirosyan, the head of the National Liberation Movement, from Armenia and his request for political asylum in Azerbaijan, local media reported.

Martirosyan had recently arrived in Azerbaijan seeking asylum after fleeing from torture and to protect himself and his family.

The opposition group headed by Martirosyan was said to have been persecuted by state agencies and authorities in Armenia.

Safarov said everyone can easily see what the Armenian government does with ordinary citizens who are not involved in politics.

He stressed that the Armenian activist’s request for asylum, particularly from Azerbaijan, is an indicator of the mentality of the Azerbaijani people.

“The Armenian saw salvation only in Azerbaijan. The Armenian’s appeal to Azerbaijan is a message to the world, including the latest biased resolution of the European Parliament. This means that, without knowing the Azerbaijani people, one cannot spread slander about them,” Safarov said.

He also added that Martirosyan’s statements once again confirmed that a criminal regime reigns in the Armenian government.

The Armenian activist held a press conference in Baku on September 18, where he revealed the true face of Armenia’s military dictatorship.

Martirosyan said that his public and political work against Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s criminal regime and corruption in Armenia led to pressure on him by that country’s government.

He also said Sargsyan’s regime has made an enemy of Azerbaijan for its own gain and has brought Armenia’s economy to the verge of collapse.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor, causing a lengthy war in the early 1990s.

The UN Security Council has adopted four resolutions on Armenia's withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to this day.
