Sheikh dismisses graft allegations
Sheikh Allahshukur Pashazada, chairman of the
Caucasus Clerical Office (CCO), has rejected allegations of his
having accepted bribes.
"The reports on my alleged taking of bribes from Kuwait`s clerical bodies, circulating in newspapers, are unfounded, to say the least," he told a press conference Monday.
Pashazada said the CCO has received assistance from abroad only twice in the past 20 years - $132,000 from Kuwait and $200,000 from Saudi Arabia.
The Sheikh said he had not inquired about the spending of those funds received from Kuwait.
Further, Pashazada said he had initially sought $50,000, in addition to Saudi Arabia`s assistance, for the construction of a religious university, but at the last moment, the Azerbaijani government did not provide its consent for this project.
