China backs Karabakh conflict solution based on UNSC resolutions
By Sara Rajabova
Beijing once again voiced its support for territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan.
Hua Chunying, spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry said China is for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, AzerTac news agency reported
She said Beijing supports the UN Security Council's resolutions on settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in accordance with the principles of international law.
Chunying made the remarks while she commented on the so-called “parliamentary elections” held by the separatist regime in Azerbaijan’s occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region.
She said her country’s position was not changed on the question.
The recent fallacious "parliamentary elections" in the Nagorno-Karabakh region stand proof of Yerevan’s belligerent stand vis a vis Baku.
Backed politically and financially by Yerevan the separatist regime in Karabakh arranged so-called "polls" on May 3, in defiance to both Azerbaijan's law and international law.
The international community showed great solidarity towards Azerbaijan's position, supporting its sovereignty and territorial integrity by criticizing the so-called "elections" and recognizing the Nagorno-Karabakh as part of the country's territory.
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions. The UN Security Council's four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal have not been enforced to this day.
Peace talks, mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. through the OSCE Minsk Group, are underway on the basis of a peace outline proposed by the Minsk Group co-chairs and dubbed the Madrid Principles. The negotiations have been largely fruitless so far.
