Azerbaijan to monitor abnormal seismic activities

Azerbaijan will monitor abnormal seismic phenomena through an experimental project of the Control Systems Institute, using a system of diagnosis and management “Robust Noise Monitoring”. The project will be launched by year's end.

Currently, work is underway to adapt the stations to the difficult field conditions - some items have been replaced in order to for all elements to withstand all weather conditions and thus significantly improve the work.

The number of such stations in the territory of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic have reached 12 already.

The stations are able to fix abnormal seismic processes some 15-20 hours prior to their surface manifestations.

The system provides the transmission of seismic acoustic signals directly to the server of the Institute. High-frequency satellite channels are used for signal transmission, which allows the institute to conduct experiments on a higher and more qualitative level.

The monitoring system is based on an analysis of the noises. This warns about the possibility of an earthquake within a radius of 300-400 kilometers in 5-20 hours. Experiments are currently underway to determine the coordinates of the centers of earthquakes.

Azerbaijan is also monitoring the country' seismic situation with its first telecommunication satellite Azerspace-1.

As the country is located in a seismically active zone, last year was marked by an intensification of the seismic processes, as well as the most powerful earthquakes in Azerbaijan over the past 15 years.
