Final results of pres poll announced
Azerbaijan`s senior electoral body announced final results of October 15 presidential elections on Sunday.
Incumbent President Ilham Aliyev won the election, gaining 88.73% of votes, according to the tallies received on 125 constituencies, said Mazahir Panahov, chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC).
Seven candidates stood in the election, which was intensely watched by local and international observers. The leader of the Umid (Hope) Party, Igbal Aghazada, gained 2.86% of ballots, while Great Establishment Party chairman Fazil Gazanfaroghlu - 2.47%. Gudrat Hasanguliyev of the Whole Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan claimed 2.28% of the popular vote, while the former chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Supreme Council, independent candidate Gulamhuseyn Alibayli - 2.23%; the leader of the Azerbaijan Liberal-Democratic Party, Fuad Aliyev 0.78%, and Muasir (Modern) Musavat Party chairman Hafiz Hajiyev 0.65%.
Panahov emphasized that the results of the voting have been invalidated in only eight polling stations where over 57,000 ballots were cast.
He said the CEC has forwarded the tallies to the country`s Constitutional Court for approval. The court is due to officially announce election results on Wednesday. The president will be sworn in within three days after the court ruling.
