Azerbaijan army ready to cope with Armenian provocation
By Mushvig Mehdiyev
Armenian media has once more published false reports about the alleged "retreat and losses of Azerbaijani armed forces", said Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry on January 20.
"In an effort to justify its non-combat deaths, exacerbate the situation on the contact line between the Armenian and Azrbaijani troops, as well as blame the Azerbaijani side for the current tenstions, the Armenian media has once again published baseless reports," the Ministry said.
The Ministry added that the Azerbaijani armed forces are fully controlling the operative situation on the frontline of the armies and are ready to beat off an Armenian provocation at any time.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
As a result of the ensuing war, Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts in 1992.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
