By Amina Nazarli
The January 20 tragedy causes pain to both Azerbaijan and Turkey, said Professor Necdet Unuvar, the head of the Turkish-Azerbaijani Interparliamentary Friendship Group, the Turkish Embassy in Azerbaijan told Trend on January 19.
“Azerbaijan and Turkey have gone through this tragedy together,” said Unuvar. “I express my condolences to the Azerbaijani and Turkish peoples.”
Turkey has always supported and will continue to support Azerbaijan in this issue, he said.
Overnight from January 19 to 20, 1990, the Soviet army began military action against Azerbaijan without declaring an emergency situation.
The investigation found out that 132 people were killed, 612 injured and 841 illegally arrested and hundreds of buildings destroyed as a result of this perpetration, according to official data from the Azerbaijan General Prosecutor's Office.
This crime also inflicted huge material damage to the state and its citizens.
