Garabagh war not over - Armenian leader
The Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh war has not ended yet, Armenian
President Serzh Sarkisian has said.
Speaking in parliament on Thursday, he said that as long as the rapid purchasing of armaments is ongoing in the region, and there is no peace accord between Azerbaijan and Armenia, it would be wrong to say that hostilities are over. He said even residents of "the most remote Armenian villages" realize this.
"The armament race continues and an agreement on a peaceful resolution of the conflict has not been signed," he said.
In reference to Azerbaijan`s enormous oil wealth, Sarkisian claimed that a stable and closely united Armenia "will be an alternative to petrodollars."
He emphasized that there are about ten million Armenians in the world today and called upon them to be active in supporting their homeland.
"Armenia should have ten million ambassadors. In the present conditions of the information war, this is our only weapon to counter petrodollars," Sarkisian said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus republics reared up in the late 1980s due to Armenia`s territorial claims. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan`s internationally recognized territory since the early 1990s. Years of peace talks, however, have brought few tangible results. Azerbaijani officials have repeatedly warned against Armenia`s policy of aggression, saying the country`s land will be freed at any cost.
