Growing traffic accidents, serious concern in Azerbaijan

By Amina Nazarli

Traffic accidents in Azerbaijan are among the main challenging issues for both drivers and pedestrians.

Due to the population growth in the capital, more and more cars flood to the roads, increasing the number of accidents.

A total of 2,635 road accidents in 2014 left 1,124 dead and 2,676 injured in Azerbaijan, said Kamran Aliyev, the Spokesman for Interior Ministry's central State Traffic Police Department.

However, there is also good news, as the number of accidents declined in comparison with 2013. Aliyev said that the number of traffic accidents decreased by 211 facts as the number of people who lost their lives or got injured stood respectively at 40 and 272.

Due to the accumulation of cars in the capital, Baku is mostly suffering from the horrifying accidents.

During the period from December 31, 2014 till January 5, 2015 a total of 11 road accidents were reported in Baku. As a result, two people were killed and 17 others injured.

Traffic police reported 5,842 administrative protocols. Most of these road accidents were caused because of high speed.

Some 216 people were fined for driving while drunk. Other 95 drivers were fined because of passing the red light.

Often, pedestrians themselves are guilty of road accidents, when they go on the roadway just before reaching close to transport. In this connection, 603 pedestrians were also fined, violating road traffic rules.

Aliyev noted that despite the dramatic change in weather conditions in the country, the situation on the roads of the country can be called satisfactory.

"The roads are completely open. In the country, except the southern region, in particular the Lankaran-Astara road, it's snowing and raining but no ice is observed over the roads," he said.

Follow traffic rules, save your future and those of your loved ones. Fast drive could be last drive.
