Former US envoy slammed over land dispute
A group of residents of the Nardaran settlement of Baku has accused former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Stanley Escudero of taking over their land.
They attempted to hold an unsanctioned picket outside the US embassy compound on Thursday. Five of the protesters sought a meeting with a representative of the diplomatic mission.
Rasim Alizada, who acted on behalf of the Nardaran residents, submitted the resolution of the picket to an embassy representative. It claimed the actions of Escudero, who currently heads the America-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce, were unlawful, and called for ousting him from the country.
The protest was not marred by any incidents.
The embassy spokesman Terry Davidson told Radio Liberty that Nardaran residents "were seeking the truth in a wrong place." He said the issue had no bearing on the US embassy and should be addressed within legal frames instead.
