Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Founder and Head of International Dialogue for Environmental Action (IDEA) Campaign Leyla Aliyeva attended the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) World Parks Congress in Sidney, Australia.

Aliyeva also attended a series of meetings on protecting the environment and biodiversity during her visit to Australia.

In this November, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is partnering with the IUCN to host the sixth IUCN World Parks Congress in the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) and Parks Australia.

This global event, to be held only once in every 10 years, is a unique opportunity to bring about changes not only for today, but for the decade ahead.

The IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 is a landmark global forum on protected areas. The congress plays a key role in ensuring the safety of certain areas.

The ultimate aim of the congress is to protect parks and other areas which are of great economic and community wellbeing importance. Therefore, the theme of the congress has been selected as “Parks, People Planet: Inspiring Solutions.”

The event was attended by presidents of some countries, ministers responsible for protection of environment, other officials, as well as heads of international and regional organizations, experts and leading NGOs.

At the plenary sessions, Leyla Aliyeva will brief the participants about Azerbaijan’s experience in protection of environment and highlight the activities of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in this regard.

In the sidelines of congress, Leyla Aliyeva already held a number of bilateral meetings to discuss the protection of environment and biodiversity. A special pavilion reflecting the IDEA’s activity was set up at the venue of the IUCN World Parks Congress.

The IDEA is implementing some large-scale local and international projects to protect the environment and to promote innovative approaches towards solving environmental problems.

The campaign is based on the principles of dialogue, action, leadership, and education - all the essential components for equipping a generation with means of fostering positive and sustainable environmental change.

One of the notable activities of the IDEA in the last three years since its establishment has been a massive tree planting campaign during which more than 3,472,000 trees have been planted.
