U.S. hails amnesty in Azerbaijan

The United States praised Azerbaijani president's decision on pardoning more than 80 prisoners.

The U.S. Department of State said Washington welcomes the October 17 pardon and release of four civil society activists in Azerbaijan.

Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on pardon of 84 people. Three former members of the NIDA movement - Shahin Novruzlu, Elsever Mursalli and Bakhtiyar Guliyev, head of the NGO Hasan Guseynli are also among those pardoned. Moreover, two Iranian citizens, two Georgian, one Turkish and one Pakistani citizen are also on the list of the pardoned.

Earlier, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule hailed Azerbaijani president's decision on amnesty.
