Child death rate high in Azerbaijan: UNICEF
The rate of child deaths in Azerbaijan is the highest among former Soviet republics, the United Nations children`s fund said.
A new report issued by UNICEF says 88 out of every 1,000 children in the country die before reaching the age of five. Azerbaijan is followed by Tajikistan, where the figure stands at 68. The rate is also high in three other Central Asian republics - Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan - as well as in Georgia.
In its assessment on countries worldwide, the report said the situation is the most severe in Sierra Leone, Angola, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Liberia. The rate of child deaths in these countries ranges between 230 and 270 per 1,000.
The lowest rate of child deaths was reported in Sweden, Singapore, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Andorra, where the death toll is only three per 1,000 children.
Overall, cases of child deaths have decreased throughout the world. In Europe, the number of dying children has halved compared to the 1990s, UNICEF said.
