Azerbaijan to double peacekeeping force in Afghanistan
An Azerbaijani parliamentary commission approved a decision on Thursday to double the number of the country`s peacekeepers in Afghanistan to 90.
The Milli Majlis commission on security and defense issues approved increasing the number of detachments in Afghanistan from two to four, after the request was forwarded by President Ilham Aliyev.
The parliament is to discuss the measure during its fall session, which begins October 2.
Azerbaijani peacekeepers serving in Afghanistan are mainly aiding efforts to prevent smuggling of weapons and drug trafficking.
It is noteworthy that Azerbaijan is also one of the former Soviet republics with a small number of peacekeepers in Iraq. About 150 Azerbaijani servicemen are guarding a dam near the town of Hadid.
