Most Azeri migrants seek employment in Russia - research
A lion’s share of migrants coming to Azerbaijan are citizens of Iran, Afghanistan, Russia and Turkey, head of the Center for Legal Assistance to Migrants, Alovsat Aliyev, said.
As for those leaving the country, the overwhelming majority of Azerbaijani nationals head to the giant northern neighbor Russia to work. According to informal reports, there are currently up to 2 million Azerbaijanis in the neighboring country, four times the amount cited in official figures.
The State Statistics Committee estimates that each Azerbaijani citizen sends between $140 and $200 to Azerbaijan every month. In total, their annual contributions to the home country amount to some $720 million.
The countries favored by Azerbaijani migrants also include Kazakhstan, Ukraine, the United States and Canada.
The number of expatriates coming to Azerbaijan to seek employment is quite large as well. There are currently some 60,000 labor migrants in the country working in various fields of the national economy, Aliyev said.
He said there were no gaps in legislation concerning migration, but added: "Difficulties with the status of migrants arise at times but experts believe that problems in this area could be solved with the adoption of the Code on Migration."
European nations top the list of world countries for the number of immigrants, followed by the U.S. and Russia.*
