US Congress cuts aid to Azerbaijan, Armenia
US Congress has reduced the volume of assistance to two South
Caucasus republics for 2008. Azerbaijan will receive $19 million in
humanitarian aid next year, compared with $28m provided in 2007,
while Armenia's aid package was lowered from $73m to $58.5m.
The US legislature approved the same amount of military assistance to the two countries, which have been locked in conflict for over a decade.
The U.S. plans to allot $3m to Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh in 2008, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) said.
The House of Representatives, the US legislature's lower chamber, earlier suggested allocating $68m and $6m to Armenia and the self-styled republic respectively. The White House had offered a $35m allocation for Armenia. The Senate, the legislative body's upper chamber, sought a $39m endorsement for the country and recommended providing no funds to the self-proclaimed republic.
Armenian lobbyists have voiced protest at the reduction in aid to Armenia and the separatist regime. "We are extremely worried that the volume of funding is shrinking at a time Turkey and Azerbaijan are keeping Armenia in a blockade," ANCA claimed.
