Baku to back Russian candidate for PACE presidency
The Azerbaijani delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will support the candidacy of a Russian representative for the assembly's presidency.
Deputy head of the delegation Gultakin Hajiyeva told reporters that Azerbaijani delegates representing the ruling New Azerbaijan Party and independent MPs would back the candidacy of Mikhail Margelov, head of the Russian delegation in PACE and of the PACE European Democrat Group.
She added, however, that Margelov could face a challenge during the vote due to existing problems between Russia and the CE.
The four-year tenure of the incumbent PACE president Rene van der Linden will expire in January 2008. The elections to the PACE presidency will be held at the winter session of the assembly due January 22-26.
Hajiyeva added that according to the PACE regulations, the next president must be the head of the Democrat Group.
