The situation on the contact line between Azerbaijan and Armenia has remained tense as the Armenian Armed Forces shattered ceasefire a total of 37 times throughout the day, Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry reported.

The ceasefire was violated in nameless hills of Gizilhajili village of Gazakh region, Aghdam village of Tovuz region, Ashagi Veysalli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Abdurrahmanli and Horadiz villages of Fuzuli region, Sarijali, Yusifjanli, Shikhlar, Merzili, Bash Garvand and Shuraabad villages of Aghdam region, Goyarkh village of Terter region, Kuropatkino village of Khojavend region and nameless hills of Mehdili village of Jabrayil region on July 21 and on the night of July 22.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four U.N. Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
