Top official says Azerbaijan committed to democratic values
Azerbaijan is successfully advancing along the path of democratic development, a presidential administration official has said.
"Azerbaijan has itself chosen this path and is confidently moving forward in that direction. Just like in America, we are working here to eliminate challenges and problems emerging on the road to democracy," head of the President`s Office socio-political department, Ali Hasanov, said in a meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, David Kramer, in Washington, last week.
Hasanov said Baku disagreed with some of the content in Kramer`s statement made at a recent hearing on Azerbaijan at the congressional Helsinki Commission. He spoke of the overall situation in the country, describing the realities of social reform and legal state-building efforts. He also informed the State Department official of the preparations under way for Azerbaijan`s October 15 presidential election, registered hopefuls and their election platforms as well as changes made to the Election Code.
The Helsinki Commission held a session July 29 to review progress in human rights and democratization in Azerbaijan prior to the elections. The Commission members claimed there were problems in these areas in the country.
Hasanov, who visited the U.S. at the invitation of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), held meetings at the State Department, Congress, US Agency for International Development (USAID) as well as International Republican Institute (IRI). Discussions centered on the course of democratic reform, situation with human rights and the process of civil society-building in Azerbaijan.
During the visit, Hasanov also attended a congress of the US Democratic Party in Denver, Colorado.
