U.S. says it committed to OSCE MG process

By Sara Rajabova

The United States voiced commitment to the OSCE Minsk Group process and said remains a co-chair.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki made remarks at a briefing on May 7.

Regarding a link between the developments in Ukraine and the negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Psaki said she is not aware of any link between the two, the U.S. Department of State said.

"We remain committed to the OSCE Minsk Group process and we remain a co-chair. And you're familiar with our efforts in Ukraine," she added.

Psaki also commented on the speech of James Warlick, the U.S. co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, about the keys to a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"In his speech, Warlick outlined the U.S. policy and the well-established principles that will serve as the foundation of a peaceful settlement," she said.

Psaki underscored that this speech reiterates the U.S'. long-standing position and commitment to this process.

U.S. co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick presented the report "Nagorno-Karabakh: The Keys to a Settlement", while speaking about the conflict resolution at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace on May 7.

He named the six conditions over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict solution.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions. The UN Security Council's four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal have not been enforced to this day.

Peace talks, mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. through the OSCE Minsk Group, are underway on the basis of a peace outline proposed by the Minsk Group co-chairs and dubbed the Madrid Principles. The negotiations have been largely fruitless so far.
