Baku celebrates Israel's Independence Day
By Nazrin Gadimova
An event dedicated to the 66th anniversary of Israel's independence was held in Baku on May 5.
Addressing the event, Israeli Ambassador to Azerbaijan Rafael Harpaz emphasized the progress and development of his country.
"We are pleased to see Azerbaijan as a closest partner," Harpaz said. "Our relations are based on a sincere friendship and mutual understanding."
Azerbaijan is an example of tolerance, he said, adding that Israel intends to expand cooperation in new areas.
Speaking at the event, Azerbaijan's Communications and High Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov congratulated Israel on the Independence Day on behalf of the Azerbaijani president.
"Jewish communities resided in Azerbaijan historically. We are proud of religious, national, cultural diversity and tolerance in Azerbaijan", the minister said, noting that Azerbaijan and Israel are an example of friendship.
The minister further said Azerbaijan and Israel signed six documents, and eight are in the preparatory stage.
Abbasov noted the Israel-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce plays an important role in trade relations between the two countries.
"We are grateful for Israel's support to Azerbaijan's fair position in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," he added.
Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948. David Ben-Gurion, the Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization and the chairman of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, declared the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel.
The event is celebrated annually in Israel with a national holiday Yom Ha'atzmaut on 5 Iyar (May 5) of every year according to the Hebrew calendar.
