Azerbaijani regions and Baku to experience strong winds

Strong winds are expected in most regions of Azerbaijan and Baku in the next two or three days, National Hydrometeorology Department predicted.

Head of Forecast Office of the Department Umayra Tagiyeva said the primary preventions for the expected strong winds in the country were made on March 15, and the agencies have been informed about it.

She said the maximum speed of wind reached 28-30 meters per second in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula on the night of March 18.

"The north and south winds will replace each other, sometimes intensifying in the next two or three days in Baku, the Absheron peninsula, and some regions of the country," Tagiyeva said.

Strong winds began in Azerbaijan on March 17 during daytime. It caused power outages in some places, and threw down some trees and power poles, causing some problems in the Sheki and Zagatala regions.

Sheki experienced power outages due to the damages inflicted on the power lines. Thus, electricity supply was cut in most of the city during the night. Moreover, strong winds threw down trees and power poles on the roadway and the Novruz festive attributes established in the city's central streets, the local TV reported.

The winds threw down 15 trees in the Zagatala region, resulting in traffic jams in some streets and damaging houses and cars in other streets.

Hurricanes are the result of the collision of warm and cold air masses in spring. Such cases have been recorded in the Gedabey, Dashkesan, Astara, and Yardimli regions in the past few years in the March-April period.

Strong winds are the most common causes of destruction associated with hurricanes. Their continuous barrage can sometimes uproot trees, knock over buildings, fling potentially deadly debris around, sink or ground boats, and flip cars.
