Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received an Italian delegation led by president of Friuli Venezia Giulia region Debora Serracchiani on March 14, AzerTag state news agency reported.

Speaking on cooperation between Azerbaijan and Italy, President Aliyev said Azerbaijan was keen to establish close relations with regions of Italy.

The president said Italy was one of the major partners of Azerbaijan in economic field, and pointed to prospects for boosting bonds in other areas too.

Serracchiani, in turn, said Friuli Venezia Giulia was determined to expand trade ties with Azerbaijan.

The Italian delegation arrived in Azerbaijan on March 13. The visit, initiated by Azerbaijan's embassy in Rome, is aimed at building cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Italian region on institutional and business levels, as well as developing the existing relations.

Italy remains the largest importer of Azerbaijani goods, and almost a quarter of Azerbaijan's exports went to Italy in the first 6 months of 2013, compared to 22 percent in the same period in 2012.

Currently, 45 Italian companies operate in Azerbaijan in insurance, banking, trade, and other areas.
