Parties boycotting October vote agree to set up new bloc
Azerbaijan`s political parties boycotting the October presidential election have reached a verbal agreement to establish a new union, the leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) said.
Ali Karimli said PFPA`s talks with other opposition parties were proceeding "very constructively." Several parties have already agreed to be represented in the new bloc, which will be called the Opposition Cooperation Center. These include the Musavat party, which has been in long-standing disagreement with the main opposition bloc, Azadlig, that makes up the PFPA.
"I hope that we will be able to soon create the new cooperation union," Karimli said.
He emphasized that the boycotting parties were trying to jointly analyze the elections. After the agreement is finalized, the opposition will adopt a common document on the outcome of the elections.
The Azadlig bloc, composed of three opposition parties, Musavat, the Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP), the Classic Popular Front Party and other opposition parties, have announced they will boycott the October 15 election. The opposition claims that holding a fair election is impossible with the current election laws.
