Two killed in blast near school
Two people were killed and two others injured following a Friday
afternoon explosion near a school in Baku.
The blast was apparently caused by an explosive that went off after employees of the Baku electricity network, BakiElektrikShebeke, opened the door of the transformer station behind the school, which is located on Mazahir Rustamov Street in the Khatai district, police said.
BakiElektrikShebeke workers had reportedly arrived in the area to install a transformer.
Fagan Mahmudov, Khatai Deputy Prosecutor, confirmed that the blast was caused by an explosive.
"An investigation is under way to determine the type of explosive...Accurate information is likely to be obtained after an investigation is conducted," he said.
The transformer was providing electricity to two nearby schools and a kindergarten.
Vugar Aliyev, spokesman for the Prosecutor General`s Office, said investigators initially believe the crime was an act of hooliganism.
