Azerbaijan, Belarus to boost defense co-op

By Jamila Babayeva

Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov met with the delegation headed by the chairman of the State Military-Industrial Committee of Belarus Sergey Gurulev on February 4.

The sides discussed the expansion and mutual understanding between Azerbaijan and Belarus in the filed of defense, the contribution of both countries in the regional security, the Defense Ministry reported.

Gurulev noted the presence of large prospects for cooperation in various areas between Azerbaijan and Belarus.

The sides exchanged views on the existing ties in the military sphere and in the sphere of military-technical education.

Hasanov noted that the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia is the main threat for the regional stability.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor that caused a brutal war in the early 1990s.

The UN Security Council's four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal have not been enforced to this day.

Peace talks, mediated by Russia, France and the US and the OSCE Minsk Group are underway on the basis of a peaceful outline -called Madrid Principle -proposed by the Minsk Group co-chairs. The negotiations have been largely fruitless so far.
