John Kerry pledges U.S.`s continuing support ‘as Azerbaijan’s vision becomes a reality’

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has sent a congratulatory letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the signing of the final investment decision for the Shah Deniz 2 project, AzerTag state news agency reported.

The letter reads that the December 17 final investment decision marks an important milestone in the history of Azerbaijan.

"By taking this first step in linking itself to Europe, Azerbaijan is on its way to becoming a reliable new source of world energy supplies and helping to ensure Europe's energy security. After so many years of hard work, the realization of the Southern Gas Corridor will not only benefit the consortium's many partners and neighbors, but bolster Azerbaijan's independence as well. On behalf of the United States, I pledge our continuing support as Azerbaijan's vision becomes a reality."

The Shah Deniz Consortium has made the final investment decision (FID) on the second stage of offshore gas condensate field development. The ceremony of signing of the document kicked off in Baku on December 17.

The gas which will be produced in the second stage of Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source of the Southern Gas Corridor project.

A consortium of Azerbaijani Shah Deniz gas condensate field development announced its choice of the TAP project in late June, as a gas transportation route to the European markets.

Shah Deniz-2 project authorization means the transition of the project from the concept into an immediate implementation stage.
