Analysts see Russian campaign in Georgia as arbitrariness
The latest developments in Georgia have shown the real aspirations of the Russian government and no countries in the region supported Moscow`s actions, Azerbaijani former state adviser, analyst Vafa Guluzada has said.
"Russia failed to show respect for the key principle - territorial integrity - and this could not but affect its image on the world stage."
Guluzada said territorial integrity and self-determination of countries remain the main principles in the world. These principles, he said, must be enforced for small nations "not outside those countries, but within them."
"Not every nation can exercise self-determination on their own land. 30-40 million Muslims who lost their freedom reside in the Russian Federation. These are Muslim nations living in their own territories - in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan - and elsewhere. Why can`t they determine their fate by separating from Russia? [Because] as soon as they start thinking about cessation, they are seized. As soon as action is taken, they [Russians] bomb and destroy," the analyst said.
Guluzada said hostilities in Georgia`s breakaway republic of South Ossetia "once again showed Russia`s essence" and underscored that the country is completely isolated from the rest of the world.
Political analyst Rustam Mammadov said superpowers create suitable conditions for anarchy by violating international law.
"This is the wrong way to impose, at any cost, one`s personal interests and pursue ambitions in geo-political processes," he said.
Mammadov added that this applied not only to Russia and its policy toward Georgia, and called on all key world players "to think about it".
"They themselves violate the norms that were created with their direct involvement, in other words, with their sponsorship," the analyst said. "This, in turn, causes anarchy and props up the tendency of the emergence of stand-offs."
