Turkic summit postponed

20 August 2008 20:03 (UTC+04:00)
The summit of Turkic leaders initially scheduled in Baku for September 5 has been put off indefinitely, Turkey`s Zaman (Time) newspaper said.
The report said Azerbaijan had postponed the summit on the grounds that Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev will not attend. Some changes have occurred in Nazarbayev`s schedule. The source said Uzbekistan`s President Islam Karimov will not be able to take part in the summit either.
Representatives of the Turkic states which gained independence after the Soviet collapse in 1991 gathered a year later for the first time. Turkey hosted another such summit in October 2006. Uzbekistan was the only country which did not attend.
