Traffic police crack down on violators
Employees of various police departments of the capital Baku are
involved in the crackdown. The tilts on the windows of cars that
are outlawed are being removed once the vehicle is pulled over.
Drivers failing to comply face administrative penalties.
The city traffic police have called on the drivers whose vehicles do not comply with the required standards to honor the amendment to the Law On Traffic by October 25. A relevant provision says that driving with items restricting the driver's view and affecting the transparency of the windows, thus endangering people, including tilts or covers, will be strictly prohibited.
President Aliyev ordered the police at a cabinet meeting on Monday to crack down on wreckless drivers. He demanded tough steps against the violators, including sequestration of vehicles.
"Who are they hiding from and what are they afraid of? The people?" the president queried.
A department head at the Baku City Traffic Police Department, Vagif Asadov, said some 20,000 cars with tilts have been stopped in the past five days. Some of the vehicles were taken to penalty areas (special areas designated to keep the cars until their owners pay a fine to claim them).
"The rules apply to everyone, including the cars of the President's Office," Asadov said.
He added that traffic police was working to ensure that not a single vehicle with window tilts remains in the city by the mentioned deadline.
