Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has congratulated Georgia's newly-elected President Giorgi Margvelashvili on the occasion of his outright victory in the October 27 presidential elections.

"Dear Mister Margvelashvili, I congratulate you wholeheartedly on the occasion of your election to the post of the President of Georgia," the message reads.

"It is pleasant to see the broadening of relations of good neighborhood and friendship that evolved historically between Azerbaijan and Georgia and the comprehensive development of our co-operation," President Aliyev said.

"I am confident that this traditional relationship of good neighborhood and friendship between our countries, our strategic partnership and multifaceted cooperation will continue to develop and strengthen further for the sake of welfare of our peoples and countries, as well as the peace, stability and progress in the region.

"I wish you a sound health, happiness and successes in your state activities," President Aliyev concluded.

Giorgi Margvelashvili from the ruling Georgian Dream coalition won the October 27 presidential elections in Georgia, gaining 62.11 percent of the votes, the Central Election Commission said on its website after the processing of all ballots.

The October 27 vote was the sixth presidential election after Georgia gained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. Mikheil Saakashvili could not run for re-election because of the two-term limit in the Constitution.
