Egypt to back Azerbaijan on Garabagh settlement

26 October 2007 11:59 (UTC+04:00)
MP Ahmed Amr Hashim said in a meeting with Azerbaijani lawmakers at the Milli Majlis on Monday that the two countries have profound historic bonds.
Hashim emphasized that Egypt and Azerbaijan both faced the occupation of territories. He said his country had succeeded in freeing all of its land from occupation and expressed a wish that Azerbaijan would accomplish this as well.
Head of the Milli Majlis Azeri-Egyptian friendship group Miri Gambarov said Azerbaijan is capable of liberating its land with the use of force, but President Ilham Aliyev's administration is seeking a negotiated solution to the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict at this point.
Gambarov cited the need for the world community's support in peace efforts. "We believe that the government of friendly Egypt will support us on this path," he added.
Egyptian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Youssef Ahmed ElSharkawy told an AzerNEWS correspondent at a reception held in honor of the guests: "One of the objectives of the five-day visit by the seven-people strong delegation was to explore ways of taking economic relations between the two countries to a high level. It is common knowledge that economic ties between the two brotherly Muslim nations are lagging behind their political relations. That is why the delegation members held discussions on the issue at the Ministries of Economic Development and Culture and Tourism today. They also intend to meet with a number of businessmen."
