Armenian troops breach ceasefire again
Armenian armed forces opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijan's armed forces based in the Kokhanebi village of Tovuz region from the positions in the territory of Armenia's Berd region yesterday and last night, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry told the Baku-based Trend news agency on October 16.
At the same time, the Azerbaijani armed forces were fired upon from the positions based near the villages of Garakhanbeyli of Fizuli region, Sarijaly of Agdam region and Kuropatkino village of Azerbaijan's Khojavend region.
The shooting was followed by retaliation.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for over two decades. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory. Ceasefire violations by the Armenian troops are frequently reported.
The UN Security Council has adopted four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but Armenia has not followed them to this day.
Russia, France and the U.S. have long been working to broker a solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through the OSCE Minsk Group, but their efforts have been largely fruitless so far.
