Azerbaijan takes over UN Security Council chairmanship

By Nazrin Gadimova

Azerbaijan assumed the chairmanship of the UN Security Council on October 1, Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev has said.

According to Abdullayev, for the second time Azerbaijan takes over the chairmanship of the UN Security Council, which was passed on from Australia.

In October 2011, Azerbaijan was elected a non-permanent member of the UN council for 2012-2013, and in May 2012, Azerbaijan led the UNSC for the first time.

According to the Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security. The Security Council consists of 15 members. Each member has one vote. In accordance with the present Charter, UN members agree with the decisions of the Security Council and execute them.

The Security Council plays a leading role in determining the presence of threats to peace or an act of aggression. It calls on the sides involved to settle disputes peacefully and suggests methods or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council may resort to sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.
