Baku-Tbilisi flights suspended over unrest
The latest wave of unrest in Georgia, including Russia's air
raid on a military base near the Tbilisi airport, caused a
suspension of flights beginning Sunday between the Georgian capital
and Baku.
A source from the Azeri state airline, AzAL, said "there was no
problem in resuming the flights on Azerbaijan's end" and everything
depends on how soon the situation in the neighboring South Caucasus
republic stabilizes.
Military action erupted in Georgia's unrecognized republic of South
Ossetia on Friday. Georgian forces bombarded the capital of the
breakaway province, Tskhinvali, in what Tbilisi termed as
restoration of its constitutional order. In retaliation, Russian
troops entered South Ossetia and pounded Georgian positions.
Georgia and Russia have blamed each other for the outbreak of
violence.
Despite the suspension of flights between the Georgian and Azeri
capitals, there has been no interruption in the transportation of
passengers by rail.
In the meantime, another regional state, Armenia, has closed its
rail link with Georgia.
Neighboring Turkey, whose air link with Georgia has been severed,
has begun evacuating its citizens from Georgia through Azerbaijan's
territory.
