Lawmakers blast bill

26 October 2007 11:56 (UTC+04:00)
The parliament should therefore adopt an appeal to US Congress denouncing the "genocide" bill, while a group of MPs is to meet with the US ambassador in Baku to convey Azerbaijan's stance."
"The passage of the congressional resolution was not aimed against Turkey alone, this issue has great importance for us as well. If we do not put forth our terse stance today, separatists may table a resolution on the recognition of Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh [an Azeri region under Armenian occupation] next," chairman of the Great Establishment Party Fazil Gazanfaroglu said.
The MP suggested that Azerbaijan recall its ambassador to the United States in protest at the adoption of the "genocide" bill.
The New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) deputy executive secretary Siyavush Novruzov called on MPs to exercise a rather cold-blooded approach to the matter. He said it was necessary to be guided "not by emotions, but common sense" when dealing with the issue.
"Azerbaijan should back Turkey, but talking of military action in Iraq is redundant. Instead of empty statements, Azerbaijani MPs should forward a letter of protest to at least one Congressman, which would have a greater effect," the party executive said.
Another deputy executive secretary of the party, MP Mubariz Gurbanly said chances for the adoption of the "genocide" resolution in full Congress were negligible. At the same time, he said it was not the right time to remain idle.
"If someone thinks that the case will be closed after taking the resolution off the agenda, they are wrong," Gurbanly said.
Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov said Baku supported Ankara, but the congressional decision should not be deemed as the United States' official position. "On the other hand, we should not forget that this is a decision not of the US Congress, but one of its committees, passed under pressure from the Armenian lobby. The members of Congress have already started to retract their signatures. I think concrete work should be done, not uproar caused, and the Milli Majlis is doing enough in this direction," the speaker said.
Asadov added that struggle against Armenians should be waged "using the very methods they use", i.e. Azerbaijan and Turkey should step up work with US lawmakers.
