Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev believes that Russia and Azerbaijan should agree upon their positions on economic issues, including the energy sector.

"Taking into account the special historical relations between our countries, it is necessary to agree a number of economic issues," Medvedev said at a meeting with participants of a meeting of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) in Moscow on September 19.

Medvedev regarded the Russian-Azerbaijani relations as very good.

"We are partners and we are developing our cooperation in all spheres," he said. "This situation was observed in the past, it continues today and I think it will continue in the future. This is obvious in practically all aspects of our cooperation."

At the same time, Medvedev said Russia and Azerbaijan have priorities for cooperation, including in the energy sector.

"Azerbaijan is also a huge energy player and I believe it is very important to work out agreed positions on a host of issues," he said.

According to the Russian prime minister, the sides will be competitors on some points and this is normal based on the international practice.

"But I think we can reach agreement. In any case, as the Russian government, we will do everything we can. I hope that our Azerbaijani partners, Azerbaijan's leadership, will do the same," Medvedev said.

At the meeting with Prime Minister Medvedev Azerbaijan was represented by the Trend and Azertag news agencies.

The meeting of the 15th General Assembly of OANA is being held in Moscow on September 18-20.
