Over 89 percent of Azerbaijanis would vote for incumbent President Ilham Aliyev if elections were held today, according to a poll conducted by the NGO Partnership Alliance in six regions of the country.
Of the polled, 89.32 percent said they would vote for Aliyev, who is seeking a third term in office, said Rufiz Gonagov, co-chair the NGO Partnership Alliance. Almost 8 percent said they would vote for Jamil Hasanli, the main opposition candidate nominated by the National Council of Democratic Forces.
The ruling New Azerbaijan Party, or YAP, also enjoys the highest approval rating among the country's political parties, the poll showed.
Over 89 percent said they approve of YAP's activities while nearly 11 percent expressed support for other parties, including 2.45 percent for the opposition Popular Front of Azerbaijan Party, 2.43 percent for Musavat Party, 1.31 percent for the Classic Popular Front of Azerbaijan Party and 1.12 percent for the Liberal Party of Azerbaijan.
A survey conducted last month by the non-governmental research group Ray (Opinion) showed Aliyev would gain over 80 percent of the vote.
Aliyev was elected president in 2003, gaining 77 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2008 with 87 percent.
Azerbaijan will hold a presidential election on October 9.
